President

Colin M. Walsh began his pipe organ building career in 1977, at age 14, by serving a full, formal apprenticeship to the firm of R.E. Meates & Sons in Dublin, Ireland. The firm, late of Telford and Telford, began in the early nineteenth century and is responsible for hundreds of pipe organs throughout Ireland and Europe.

Mr. Walsh immigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada, as a journeyman organbuilder. There he continued in his craft, building and restoring pipe organs throughout the Maritime Provinces.

In 1985, Colin established his home in the Philadelphia area where he became actively engaged in the reconstruction and restoration of pipe instruments throughout the Northeast. Over the next decade, he made great strides to foster and enhance the traditional art or organbuidling, laboring over dozens of faithful restorations and rebuilds in the region, and attracting national acclaim for his work.

Colin left Mangam Organs of Philadelphia in 1995 to found his own firm, C. M. Walsh Pipe Organs. Through the company, Colin continues the disciplines of traditional organbuilding and its commitment to cutting edge technologies. The Walsh Organs team embodies his unique perspective, carrying it with us wherever we go.

Shop Supervisor/Journeyman Organbuilder

Keith began his organbuilding career shortly after moving to Philadelphia from his home town of Dublin, Ireland in 1994. When Colin started his own firm, Keith was there as Walsh Organs’ first employee, completing his apprenticeship by learning each and every aspect of his craft in the quickly growing, sometimes chaotic nascent company.

Now, a decade later, Keith serves as the shop foreman for Walsh Organs, training and supervising new employees while continuing to apply his remarkable skill to every project that our firm undertakes. Beyond the designs of our cases, the feel of our consoles and the tonal beauty of our pipework, there are thousands of details never seen by musicians or committee members. Keith is the reason that the acres of leatherwork and miles of wiring that go into our instruments from year to year are meticulously prepared and beautifully finished.

Ask Keith what he likes most about this part of the world, and he might talk about the gym that he frequents, or about the Penn’s Landing concerts that he enjoys on a regular basis, or even about how much he loves Philly sports (Keith rarely misses an Eagle’s home game). He probably won’t tell you how much he loves his work as an organbuilder, but that’s ok. Just look inside one of our instruments, and you’ll know.

Webmaster, Senior Apprentice

An accomplished website designer and graphic artist since his youth, Aaron Morgan first came to our firm by taking on Walsh Organs as a client for his technical services, building our internet presence, creating the elegant graphic interface that graces our website today, and guiding our company gently but steadily into the 21st Century. Fortunately for us, the mission of the firm spoke to the Renaissance-Artisan-Musician in Aaron, who brought his extensive package of technical skills to Walsh Organs in 2003 when he accepted an offer to join the firm full-time.

Whereas some digital experts might prefer to set up shop in the company office and call it a day, Aaron was driven to learn everything there was to learn about the design, construction and curatorship of pipe instruments. An aficionado of serious music, classic composers and pipe organs from his childhood in Morgantown, PA, Aaron grew up with a deep love of musical instruments, as well as a driving curiosity about how they worked. When he began his technical work with our company, Aaron also chose to enter our apprenticeship program. Through that program, Aaron has been immersed our company's particular approaches to wood selection, woodworking, leatherwork, temperament, tuning and curatorship, learning each skill in turn while continuing his work developing the technical aspects of the company from day to day.

In those odd hours when Aaron isn't involved with pipe organs, he enjoys other avocations, engineering digital recordings for a number of applications, and playing drums with other musician-friends in his home-based studio in Berwyn. Aaron is currently mastering Linux, and is actively involved in the open source audio software community. He dreams of the day when his skills will fuse to produce some prodigious work or other. We believe in Aaron's dream, and are happy that he has chosen to share it, and his gifts, with us.
